Key Responsibilities

  • Provide front-line pastoral support to students experiencing social, emotional, or behavioural difficulties, offering guidance and a listening ear.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor individual support plans for vulnerable students, in collaboration with teaching staff, parents/carers, and external professionals.
  • Act as a key point of contact for parents/carers regarding student welfare issues, ensuring effective communication and partnership working.
  • Identify and address emerging pastoral concerns, implementing early intervention strategies to prevent escalation.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions and interventions, adhering to safeguarding policies and data protection regulations.
  • Lead small group work or individual sessions focusing on topics such as self-esteem, resilience, conflict resolution, and healthy relationships.
  • Liaise with external agencies (e.g., social services, mental health support, youth offending teams) to secure appropriate additional support for students.
  • Contribute to the school's overall safeguarding framework, reporting concerns and participating in relevant training and meetings.
  • Support the transition of new students into the school environment, ensuring they settle in well and feel supported.
  • Assist in the organisation and delivery of pastoral events, workshops, and awareness campaigns.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 2 years) in a pastoral, youth work, or support role, ideally within an educational setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport quickly with young people, families, and staff.
  • Strong understanding of child development, common adolescent issues, and effective support strategies.
  • Demonstrable experience in conflict resolution and managing challenging behaviours with a calm and empathetic approach.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and child protection procedures and legislation.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail for record-keeping and case management.
  • Proficiency in using IT systems for communication and data management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A relevant qualification in youth work, counselling, social work, education, or a related field (e.g., Level 3 or above).
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and understanding of cultural sensitivities.
  • First Aid qualification.
  • Knowledge of local community resources and support networks in Nottinghamshire.
