Job Description

Hiring.zycto is urgently seeking a highly skilled and experienced Building Inspector to join our dedicated team in Downtown, Royal Oak. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive field inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings at various stages of construction.
  • Verify compliance with approved plans, specifications, and all applicable building, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical codes.
  • Identify code violations, construction defects, and unsafe conditions, issuing detailed correction notices as necessary.
  • Provide technical assistance and interpretation of building codes to contractors, engineers, architects, and the public.
  • Maintain accurate and thorough inspection records, reports, and documentation.
  • Witness and test construction materials and methods, ensuring quality and adherence to standards.
  • Review construction plans and blueprints for compliance with codes and regulations prior to site inspections.
  • Collaborate with other departmental staff, including planning, zoning, and fire safety personnel, to ensure integrated compliance.
  • Respond to citizen inquiries and complaints regarding potential code violations and unsafe structures.
  • Attend pre-construction meetings and final walk-throughs to ensure project completion meets all regulatory requirements.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in interpreting and applying local, state, and national building codes (e.g., IBC, IRC, NEC, IMC, UPC).
  • Strong understanding of construction principles, materials, and methods across various trades.
  • Excellent observational and analytical skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, schematics, and construction documents.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for reporting, explaining violations, and providing guidance.
  • Proficiency with inspection software and standard office applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for travel to various inspection sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Building Official (CBO) or multiple ICC certifications (e.g., Commercial Building Inspector, Residential Building Inspector, Electrical Inspector, Plumbing Inspector, Mechanical Inspector).
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
  • Experience with permit tracking systems and digital plan review platforms.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations and green building standards.
  • Prior experience working with municipalities or private inspection firms in Michigan.
